Me!

Back before social media was a thing, someone said it was vain to have a page with my pictures on. But now we have Twitter and Facebook and Instagram so who's laughing now? Now I guess the question is more: why do you still have a personal website?  Well at least it gives me a place to back up my photos that I actually have some control over.

I'm more comfortable behind the lens than in front, but a while back I started trying to keep a current picture on my site.  Before social media it was a lot harder to know what people looked like, which was a problem if you ever wanted to meet in real life.  Or just were really, really nosey.

Roger & Eva's Wedding

Roger and Eva were getting married in Roger's native Edinburgh, which was about as far away from Chichester as you could get without needing a translator, but Foggy, Loukesy and myself hopped on an EasyJet and went anyway. I think the delays at the airport took longer than the flight.

Obligatory vaguely amusing anecdotes: the vicar telling the whole congregation that Roger had been made redundant that week; earlier as the flight landed Foggy pointed out that this might mean they'd have to cancel the honeymoon, and me pointing out that, being Scottish, he'd never cancel because he'd lose his deposit. That last one's more funny when you know that my ears had popped on the flight, so I said it at the top of my voice - on a 'plane full of Scots. Oh, and we got on the official wedding photos in our see-you-Jimmy hats. I almost made a fool out of myself comparing the sporrans people were wearing to dead badgers, until one guest turned around wearing a sporran made out of a badger's head. And probably the only Scottish wedding in history not to serve alcohol, although we found the hotel bar fairly quickly.

Dumfries to Chichester

You can tell when I get bored or nervous - I start shooting everything in sight. This is a record of the journey from Dumfries in Scotland back to Chichester on the south coast of England, which took three trains, a 'plane, a bus, and about nine hours.

I took many pictures of the clouds from above when on the 'plane, which was in part due to both boredom and nerves. As I was above the engine I switched to a widescreen mode I found while playing with the camera to cut out as much machinery as possible. I wouldn't have been able to take any pics if it wasn't for the nice Goth girl reading Empire magazine switching seats with me - thanks! :)

Dumfries

Wanting to try out my new camera properly, I volunteered to travel from the south coast of England up to Dumfries in Scotland - a round trip of around 16 hours - just to install one computer. So, the plan was two days of travelling, an hour or so of installing, and the best part of a day photographing. However, as the server ended up taking from 10am to about 4:30pm due to network problems, the following were taken during an extended lunch break while I was trying to figure out what the hell was going wrong...

As the new camera has not only a 10x optical zoom (the same as a good pair of binoculars, and better than my 8x25 binoculars I carry in my backpack) but also lots of new settings for taking landscapes, portraits, action shots, night shots etc., it might look like there are a number of near-duplicate pictures as I play around with the settings. There are also a lot of photographs of birds on a river...
