Waxwings, Nottingham 2004

Feature image

Pictures taken just behind the Carlton Road Library in Nottingham. The light was lousy - it had snowed a few days before and was threatening to again - but although dark the images seem to have come out quite well.

Miscellaneous shots from around Nottingham, including: around the Council House at Christmas; snow in the garden; and some industrial buildings around the canal down to Meadow Lane.

Canalside Herons

A walk down Nottingham's canal saw at least one, if not two, very sociable Herons. The first flew quite close and then took up residence on the path near one of the new buildings on Island Street. The second encounter took place just down from Sainsbury's, where a Heron was standing in the runoff stream. I edged closer and closer, taking pictures, until a couple walked up, one wearing a bright yellow jacket. I figured that they would scare the bird off, so I went as close as possible to get pictures, but they just walked right past without the bird even appearing nervous!

Unfortunately the light was lousy, as it had been snowing earlier in the day. It wouldn't have been so bad if the snow had settled, as it might have reflected a little light, but it was just very dark and murky. Not the best conditions for zoom photography, so some of the images might need a little manipulation before they're at their best.

Baslow, Peak District

After doing some work in Manchester, the boys from the Freedom2 Chichester offices managed a detour via a village called Baslow in Derbyshire. I wonder how that happened? Could they be dropping someone off in Nottingham on the way instead of taking him back to work?

The Garden Café furnished us with coffees and some fine omelettes - although I had scrambled eggs and salmon on toast, Bob had another omelette instead of pudding - and then we had a relaxing walk along the Derwent. Well, it beats working.

Docklands 2

Going back to the docklands hosting facility to fix my broken server.  To be honest I only know this because when I came to re-do this gallery for the new, new gallery code I could read it on the first image, a picture of the Icon Bar report into what took the server offline.

Miscellaneous bits and pieces snapped around Chichester; the latter half while I was playing around with my "new" camera, taking pics of the wildlife in Priory Park.

Dumfries

Wanting to try out my new camera properly, I volunteered to travel from the south coast of England up to Dumfries in Scotland - a round trip of around 16 hours - just to install one computer. So, the plan was two days of travelling, an hour or so of installing, and the best part of a day photographing. However, as the server ended up taking from 10am to about 4:30pm due to network problems, the following were taken during an extended lunch break while I was trying to figure out what the hell was going wrong...

As the new camera has not only a 10x optical zoom (the same as a good pair of binoculars, and better than my 8x25 binoculars I carry in my backpack) but also lots of new settings for taking landscapes, portraits, action shots, night shots etc., it might look like there are a number of near-duplicate pictures as I play around with the settings. There are also a lot of photographs of birds on a river...
